MACEDONIAProsecutors open preliminary probe into President Ivanov’s alleged breach of ConstitutionPublished 5 hours agoon October 30, 2018By Makfax
Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched preliminary inquiry involving President Gjorgje Ivanov following two criminal charges filed against him.
The prosecutors say the charges were filed by anonymous citizens who claim that Ivanov violated the Constitution twice. They charge Ivanov over alleged incompliance with the Constitution by his refusal to sign the Law on use of languages and the Prespa Agreement.
The purpose of the probe is to determine whether the initiators have enough evidence to justify further criminal proceedings against the head of state.
President Ivanov refused to sign a decree on a law designed to ratify the agreement between Macedonia and Greece over Macedonia’s name, approved by parliament on 20 June this year. On 17 June, the two countries signed a treaty to end the perennial dispute over Macedonia’s name.
President Ivanov did not sign the decree claiming that he does not accept a change of the Constitution in a bid to change the constitutional name of the country.
